In November 2023, my brother took his life. I can’t put the shock of it into words, but I’m processing it through a series of paintings that I’ve been working on this year. They’ve become a deeply personal exploration of grief while serving as my tool for healing. I found that facing the pain of grief is freeing, rather than pushing it away, and that painting is my guiding light through the incomprehensible.
I started this piece by observing my brother and I as 2 kids set out to play the game of life. It’s like our souls agreed to share a childhood in the same bubble of reality, but our choices later lead us down different paths. As I’m retracing memories, I’m finding him again through these paintings but with a new lens.

Fear In Excitement, 2023
oil on canvas
11x16”
The junction of two souls finding each other can begin in excitement, but inevitably lead to the surfacing of deeper shadows. Unspoken conversations and silent exchanges can form the foundation of a connection, almost like a dance, that leads to the tender discovery of deeper truths within one another. This series aims to explore the delicate interplay of fear and vulnerability.

But rather than delving into the complexity and wrestling with how to create fair competition as gender norms shift, we are succumbing to a panic that forces us to choose between the extremes of firm exclusion and full inclusion." -Jerry Brewer

The simulacrum is true. Abstraction today is no longer that of the map, the double, the mirror or the concept. Simulation is no longer that of a territory, a referential being or a substance. It is the generation by models of a real without origin or reality: a hyperreal
The simulacrum is never that which conceals the truth--it is the truth which conceals that there is none.

With two weeks before midterm elections on November 8, artist-activists in partnership with People For the American Way launched a set of digital billboards across the Atlanta-metro area as part of People For’s multi-platform Georgia campaign — including radio ads, digital ads, press outreach and social media — focused on why Republicans Brian Kemp and Herschel Walker are the wrong choices for Black male voters in Georgia, and to help motivate people to the polls with an urgent message: vote.
Participating artists include visual artists Victoria Cassinova, Shepard Fairey and Alyson Shotz who both participated in People For’s “Enough of Trump” art advocacy campaign during the 2020 presidential election cycle, and renowned multimedia artist Carrie Mae Weems, who played a leading role in formulating the “Enough of Trump” campaign.

I sometimes turn my own monsters into dancers, wearing salesmen suits, as a cathartic tool to make sense of myself. I found that if I personify them as these wild characters in my head trying to sell me war, then I can be the observer and find peace in their mischief. An overcoming of self, finding syntropy in entropy.

Portrait of Bryan Stevenson commission
.
Since 1989, he has been executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative. EJI litigates on behalf of condemned prisoners, juvenile offenders, people wrongly convicted or charged, poor people denied effective representation, and others whose trials are marked by racial bias or prosecutorial misconduct. His work on criminal justice, capital punishment and civil rights issues is beyond inspiring. I am honored and grateful to get the chance to express his light through this portrait, a true hero.

This is an insane story about Sean Ellis who was wrongly convicted of murdering a cop in 1993 at just 19, then served 21 years in prison as an innocent man. Police misconduct and systemic injustice seems to never end, but telling these stories will hopefully continue to bring corruption to the surface in order to make REAL change. I’m grateful to be able to contribute to this story with @gravillisinc through art. Check it out!

This piece touches on intergenerational trauma, which states that trauma can be transferred from the first generation of trauma survivors to the second and further generations of offspring of the survivors via complex post-traumatic stress disorder mechanisms. This is often experienced/felt within black households in America, and around the world.
MASTERPIECE is a bold, international, multidisciplinary group exhibition, at Band of Vices gallery, whose aim is to establish a dialogue between contemporary artists of the present and Master artists that will illuminate the ever-shifting issues consuming us today. This painting is based off of a photo taken by one of my favorite renowned photographers, Viviane Sassen, from her first monograph, Flamboya (2004-2008).

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the difference between ego and confidence. Seems like ego is somewhat rooted in the comparison of others, while confidence is rooted in its own source of being. It’s like it negates the gaze of anything outside of itself and becomes magnetic; it’s connected to something greater. But ego thrives upon what’s outside of itself, the approval of others, which can be fickle. Still, maybe we couldn’t be human without the ego in our corner..
